Description

Monoptilota is a genus of moths belonging to the family Pyralidae, order Lepidoptera. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests, particularly because their larvae feed on the reproductive structures of various host plants, leading to substantial yield losses in specialized crop production.

The primary host plants for this pest include various species of legumes. The larvae target the pods and seeds, making the crop vulnerable during the maturation phase. Because the infestation often starts in the field and may continue during storage, it poses a severe threat to post-harvest produce quality.

The biological cycle follows a standard holometabolous development process. Adult moths lay eggs on the host plants, and the emerging larvae bore directly into the pod. Once inside, the larvae feed on the seeds, creating protective webbing and filling the cavity with frass, which provides a substrate for secondary mold and bacteria.

The nature of the damage is characterized by hollowed-out seeds and external holes in the pods. This results in direct yield loss, reduced germination rates for seed crops, and increased contamination of harvested lots. The presence of these larvae in storage facilities can lead to rapid spread if not properly managed.
