Pistachio moth

The pistachio moth (Myelois duplipunctatella) is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is a highly specialized insect that targets pistachio trees (Pistacia vera). Because it feeds directly on the developing nuts, it poses a major threat to commercial pistachio production worldwide.

The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which bore into the nut and consume the kernel. This feeding behavior destroys the economic value of the crop. Once a larva has entered the fruit, it leaves behind frass and webbing, which facilitates the growth of secondary molds and further degrades the quality of the harvest, making it unfit for market.

Regarding its life cycle, Myelois duplipunctatella typically overwinters as mature larvae inside mummified nuts that remain on the tree or have fallen to the ground. In the spring, these larvae pupate and emerge as adults. Depending on the climate, the pest can complete several generations throughout the growing season, which explains why the infestation pressure can increase rapidly if left unmanaged.

The impact of this pest is severe, with some infestations capable of destroying a majority of the yield if uncontrolled. Farmers must monitor the activity of adult moths during the fruit-set period to predict infestation waves. Detecting the presence of larvae early is crucial to preventing the widespread transmission of the pest across the orchard.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling the pistachio moth effectively:

• Orchard sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infested nuts and mummies to reduce the overwintering population.
• Monitoring adult flight patterns using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications.
• Applying selective insecticides that target larvae before they penetrate the nut shells.
• Encouraging biological control agents to naturally regulate the moth population in the orchard ecosystem.
