Systematic position. The eighteen-spotted ladybird (Myrrha octodecimguttata) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Coccinellidae. While many members of this family are beneficial predators of aphids and scale insects, this specific species can exhibit phytophagous behavior, causing notable damage to coniferous tree species under certain environmental conditions.

Host plants and damage. This pest primarily targets coniferous trees, such as pines and spruces. Both adults and larvae feed on the needles, causing irregular surface feeding marks and tissue loss. Heavy infestations lead to chlorosis, browning, and premature needle drop, which detracts from the health and ornamental value of the host plants.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Myrrha octodecimguttata is closely synchronized with the growth phases of its host conifers. Adults overwinter in protected locations such as bark crevices or leaf litter. Upon the arrival of spring, they emerge to feed and begin the oviposition process on the needles. The larval development includes several instars, followed by pupation on the surface of the host needles.

By weakening the tree through the consumption of foliage, the pest reduces the host's vigor, making it more susceptible to secondary stressors such as drought, fungal pathogens, and other environmental impacts.
