Necydalis beetle

The genus Necydalis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. These insects are notable for their mimicry, as many species resemble wasps, which serves as a defensive mechanism against potential predators. The most representative species in this group is Necydalis major, which is widely studied due to its impact on forest health.

This pest targets various deciduous trees, with a particular preference for alder, willow, birch, linden, and aspen. While they often colonize weakened, sick, or dying trees, they can also cause significant damage to seemingly healthy stands if the environmental conditions are favorable for the pest's population growth.

The life cycle of the Necydalis beetle typically spans two to three years. Adults emerge during the summer months, usually from June to August. After mating, females deposit eggs into cracks or wounds in the bark of the host tree. Once hatched, the larvae immediately begin boring into the bark and eventually penetrate the sapwood and heartwood.

The larvae are highly destructive, creating long, irregular galleries inside the trunk that disrupt the tree's vascular system. The presence of these larvae is often indicated by piles of frass (sawdust) at the base of the tree or around the entry points. Severe infestations lead to a decline in tree vigor, branch dieback, and eventual tree death, while also ruining the quality of timber.

Management and control strategies focus on prevention and silvicultural practices:

• regular forest sanitation, including the removal of infested trees before adult emergence;
• maintenance of tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization;
• application of insecticides to the trunks during peak flight periods in infested areas;
• encouraging natural predators, such as woodpeckers and parasitic wasps, to control the beetle population.
