Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. The genus Necydalis is distinctive due to its reduced elytra, which resemble those of wasps, providing a clear example of Batesian mimicry. These insects are important components of the forest ecosystem, though some species are considered pests.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets deciduous tree species. It is commonly found on oaks, beeches, alders, and various fruit-bearing trees. The beetle typically seeks out trees that are already stressed, declining, or damaged by environmental factors, as these provide the ideal conditions for larval development.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when adult females oviposit in cracks or wounds in the tree bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood. They spend a significant amount of time tunneling through the wood, creating extensive galleries packed with frass. Depending on the environment and wood moisture, the cycle can span multiple years.

Damage and economic impact. The primary economic damage is caused by the larval feeding, which impairs the tree's vascular system. This disruption prevents the flow of nutrients, leading to branch dieback and reduced vitality of the entire tree. Heavily infested timber loses its structural integrity and commercial value, posing a risk in managed forest stands.

Control measures. Management of this pest focuses on silvicultural practices and integrated pest management strategies.
