Stilt bug

The stilt bug, scientifically known as Neides tipularius, is a member of the Berytidae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are easily recognizable by their extremely slender, elongated bodies and long, thin legs that resemble stilts. As true bugs, they possess specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts designed to extract sap from plant tissues, which is the primary source of their nutrition.

These pests primarily target various herbaceous plants, including legumes, certain vegetable crops, and aromatic herbs. While they are often considered minor pests in many regions, high population densities in favorable weather conditions can lead to significant physiological stress for the host plants. Their presence is frequently associated with fields that have a high density of host weeds.

The biological cycle of Neides tipularius involves incomplete metamorphosis, including the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The bugs overwinter as adults in protected microhabitats such as forest litter, field margins, or dense dry vegetation. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to host plants to feed, mate, and deposit their eggs on foliage.

The damage caused by the stilt bug is primarily due to the mechanical destruction of plant cells during feeding. Symptoms include localized chlorosis, spotting on leaves, and occasionally stunted growth or fruit deformation in sensitive crops. By weakening the plant’s structural integrity and suppressing growth, they increase the overall risk of susceptibility to secondary biotic stresses.

To mitigate the impact of Neides tipularius in agricultural settings, consider the following strategies:
