Description
Systematic position. The ash plant bug (Neoborus nubilus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae (plant bugs). It is a specialized pest that maintains a close ecological relationship with ash trees, which serve as its primary hosts.
Host plants. The species feeds primarily on common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and other species within the Fraxinus genus. The bugs congregate on the underside and surface of leaves, piercing the tissue to extract fluids, which negatively affects the tree's health and vitality.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Neoborus nubilus is synchronized with the phenology of its host tree. Eggs typically overwinter within the bark or near the buds. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs begin feeding immediately on tender young leaves, progressing through several instars before reaching the adult stage.
Damage and severity. Feeding by the ash plant bug causes characteristic spotting, commonly known as stippling, on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, these spots may cause the foliage to lose its green color, resulting in chlorosis, necrosis, and potentially early defoliation if the population density is sufficiently high.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include:
- Regular monitoring of canopy health during the spring.
- Application of systemic insecticides during the early nymph stage if thresholds are exceeded.
- Promoting biodiversity to encourage natural predators such as lacewings and ladybirds.
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper pruning and watering to help them withstand pest pressure.
