Description

Systematic position: The red-headed ash borer (Neoclytus acuminatus) is a member of the Cerambycidae family within the order Coleoptera. This wood-boring beetle is recognized as a significant technical pest, capable of attacking a wide variety of hardwood trees and posing a threat to both forestry and ornamental plantings.

Host plants: The beetle primarily targets stressed or freshly cut hardwood trees. Its host range includes ash, oak, elm, hickory, and grapevine. Additionally, it frequently infests fruit trees such as peach, plum, and pear, especially when the trees are weakened by drought, disease, or mechanical injury.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is generally completed in one year. Adults are active in spring and early summer. Females lay their eggs in bark crevices, and larvae bore into the sapwood, creating extensive, winding galleries packed with frass. The larval stage is the most destructive, as they consume the inner bark and outer sapwood, eventually pupating within the wood.

Damage and economic impact: Damage is manifested by internal structural degradation of the host tree. Larval feeding disrupts nutrient and water transport, leading to canopy dieback and eventual tree mortality. In timber production, infestation renders the wood commercially useless due to the presence of internal tunnels and structural weakening.

Protection measures: Management relies on integrated practices to reduce beetle populations:

  • Prompt removal and destruction of infested wood before adult emergence.
  • Avoidance of storing fresh firewood near healthy trees or orchards.
  • Monitoring with pheromone traps to time preventive insecticide applications.
