Ash borer

Systematic position: The Ash borer (Neoclytus caprea) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (longhorned beetles). It is recognized as a significant technical pest, primarily noted for its ability to damage the wood of various tree species within its native and introduced range, causing notable forestry issues.

Host plants: The primary hosts are ash trees (Fraxinus species). While the beetle often attacks stressed or dying trees, it can also infest freshly cut logs and timber stored in forests or mill yards. Its presence can rapidly degrade the quality of harvested wood, making it unsuitable for structural or high-grade timber use.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is typically completed in one year. Adults emerge in the spring and early summer to mate. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices or wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bark and eventually penetrate the sapwood and heartwood, where they create intricate galleries as they feed and develop before pupation.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The larval stage is the most destructive. By tunneling deep into the wood, larvae disrupt nutrient transport and physically degrade the trunk's integrity. High levels of infestation can lead to tree mortality, especially in urban environments where trees are already stressed by climate or environmental factors.

Protection measures: Management focuses on sanitation and prevention. Prompt removal and destruction of infested logs before beetle emergence is the most effective method. In high-value areas, preventive spraying of trunks with registered insecticides can deter egg-laying. Furthermore, storing logs away from susceptible stands and debarking them immediately after cutting can significantly reduce infestation risks.
