Description
Neoclytus cordifer is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae and subfamily Cerambycinae. As a wood-boring insect, it occupies a significant niche in forest ecosystems, primarily interacting with various deciduous tree species during their weaker growth stages or following harvesting.
This pest mainly infests broad-leaved trees. In agricultural and forestry terms, it primarily targets stressed or declining trees, as well as fresh logs or timber stored in open areas. The larvae prefer to feed on the inner bark and sapwood, which are the most nutrient-rich tissues of the tree.
The life cycle involves the transformation from egg to larva, pupa, and adult beetle. Females deposit eggs into cracks or crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the wood, creating intricate galleries that serve as both their living space and food source. The pupation phase typically occurs inside the timber, after which adult beetles emerge through circular exit holes.
The damage caused by Neoclytus cordifer is characterized by the destruction of vascular tissues, which inhibits the transport of nutrients and water throughout the plant. Furthermore, the tunnels created by the larvae degrade the structural integrity of the wood, rendering it less valuable for timber production and increasing the risk of secondary infections from fungi and bacteria.
