Description
The Red-headed ash borer (Neoclytus mucronatus) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This insect is widely recognized as a wood-boring pest that primarily targets weakened, stressed, or dying hardwood trees, playing a critical role in the decomposition process of dead timber.
This pest affects a variety of hosts, including ash, grapevines, persimmons, oak, and hickory. In urban and agricultural environments, it is often found infesting fruit trees or ornamental hardwoods that have suffered mechanical damage or are struggling due to environmental factors.
The biological lifecycle of Neoclytus mucronatus is typical for longhorned beetles. Adult females lay eggs in bark crevices, and upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the sapwood and heartwood. They construct complex galleries, where they feed and develop, typically overwintering as larvae deep within the wood.
