Neoclytus nubilus

Neoclytus nubilus is a species of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) belonging to the order Coleoptera. As a wood-boring insect, it is recognized as a pest that affects various woody plants, particularly focusing on those that are weakened or compromised due to environmental stressors or mechanical injury.

The host range of this beetle typically includes a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees. It is frequently observed in neglected orchards, where it targets dead, dying, or stressed tree branches. While it does not always attack healthy, vigorous trees, its presence can quickly accelerate the decline of an already ailing tree by destroying its structural integrity.

The biology of Neoclytus nubilus involves a life cycle centered around the internal tissues of the host plant. Adult females deposit eggs into bark crevices or wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bark and eventually penetrate the sapwood and heartwood. The larval stage is the most destructive, as they consume the wood while creating elaborate galleries.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface of the bark. Accumulation of frass (fine wood powder) at the base of the tree is a common indicator of an active infestation. Such damage disrupts nutrient and water transport within the tree, causing branch dieback and eventually leading to the death of the host.
