Apple fruit rhynchitid

The apple fruit rhynchitid (Neocoenorrhinus germanicus) is a beetle belonging to the family Rhynchitidae within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest in fruit orchards, known for its ability to damage the foliage and shoots of various pomaceous and stone fruit trees.

This pest primarily affects species such as apple, pear, plum, cherry, and quince trees. By targeting young buds and tender shoots, the beetle can severely hinder the vegetative growth of trees, particularly in young plantations or nurseries where plant structure is crucial.

The biology of Neocoenorrhinus germanicus is characterized by overwintering as adults or larvae in the soil. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed on developing buds and leaves. The mating and egg-laying process occurs on the stems of leaves or young shoots, where the female creates cuts to ensure the tissue withers, providing a suitable environment for the larvae.

Damage caused by the apple fruit rhynchitid is visible as wilting, browning, and curling of the shoot tips and leaves. This feeding behavior not only destroys the immediate foliage but also compromises the tree's health by interfering with its ability to photosynthesize effectively, which often leads to poor fruit set and potential loss of yield.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as regular cultivation of the soil around the base of the trees help disturb the overwintering stages of the pest. Pruning and destroying infested shoots early in the season are critical for limiting the population size. If the infestation is severe, chemical control using targeted insecticides should be applied during the early stages of bud development.
