Description
Systematic position. The rust-brown flea beetle (Neocrepidodera ferruginea) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a well-known representative of the leaf beetle subfamily, characterized by its jumping behavior, which is enabled by enlarged hind femurs designed for rapid escape from threats.
Affected crops. This pest primarily targets plants within the Asteraceae family, though it is frequently found on various perennial grasses and fodder crops. It often utilizes wild weeds as primary hosts, subsequently migrating to nearby cultivated fields when the environmental conditions or host quality change, posing a risk to diverse agricultural ecosystems.
Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter within the topsoil or among crop debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge, begin feeding on young foliage, and mate. Females lay eggs in the soil near the roots of host plants, where the developing larvae spend their life cycle feeding on root systems before pupating.
Damage and pest status. Adult beetles create numerous small holes in leaf blades, a condition often described as shot-hole damage, which inhibits photosynthesis and weakens the plant. The larval stage is often more detrimental as it feeds on the roots, depriving the plant of essential water and nutrient uptake, leading to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections.
Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this beetle. Recommended practices include deep autumn plowing to disturb wintering sites, rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative hosts, and regular field scouting. If thresholds are exceeded, the application of targeted insecticides during the active adult phase is effective in preventing large-scale crop loss.
