Neomegalotomus is a genus of bugs in the family Alydidae, commonly known as broad-headed bugs. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests in tropical and subtropical regions. They are particularly noted for their impact on leguminous crops, where they can cause substantial yield losses if not managed effectively during the critical stages of pod development.

The host range of Neomegalotomus is primarily focused on legumes, with soybean being the most economically important crop affected. These bugs are highly adaptable, capable of thriving on various wild host plants when primary crops are unavailable. This ability to maintain populations in non-crop areas makes them persistent threats to nearby agricultural lands.

The life cycle follows a hemimetabolous pattern, involving egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The development rate is heavily influenced by ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the generational turnover. Adults are mobile and capable of migrating between fields, which complicates control measures and requires monitoring across large areas.

Damage occurs when both adults and nymphs pierce the pod wall with their rostrum to feed on developing seeds. This feeding behavior causes pod abortion, seed shriveling, and significant reduction in seed weight and germination quality. The necrotic lesions formed at the feeding sites often serve as points of entry for pathogens, further compromising the quality of the harvest.
