Description

Strawberry thrips (Neophysopus fragariae) are destructive pests belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These tiny, slender insects are known for their ability to significantly impair the physiological functions of strawberry plants by feeding on plant sap.

The primary host for this pest is the cultivated strawberry (Fragaria ananassa). Under favorable environmental conditions, the population can expand rapidly, spreading from plant to plant and potentially affecting other members of the Rosaceae family growing in the vicinity.

The lifecycle of Neophysopus fragariae consists of egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. The insects overwinter in the soil or protected areas within plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to colonize new growth, including flower buds and young foliage.

Damage caused by this species is characterized by the silvering or bronzing of leaves. When feeding occurs on flowers, it interferes with pollination and fruit development. The resulting berries are often deformed, hard, and lack flavor, making them unsuitable for commercial sale.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. This includes maintaining field hygiene, practicing crop rotation, and implementing biological controls. Chemical insecticides should be used selectively to prevent the buildup of resistance and to minimize the impact on beneficial insect populations.
