Description

Neoplocaederus is a genus of longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae) known as significant agricultural pests that affect woody plants. These insects are classified as wood-boring beetles, capable of causing severe structural damage to fruit trees and ornamental plantations, particularly in warmer climatic zones.

In terms of systematic position, this genus belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Cerambycidae, and subfamily Cerambycinae. Adult beetles are characterized by their relatively large size and exceptionally long antennae. They are primarily nocturnal, making them difficult to detect during standard daytime inspections of orchards.

The host plants for Neoplocaederus are diverse, mainly focusing on fruit-bearing trees such as almond, apricot, peach, and apple. The larvae represent the most destructive stage, as they tunnel deeply into the cambium and sapwood, which is critical for the nutrient transport systems of the host tree.

The life cycle begins when females lay eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the tree, creating extensive galleries. This feeding behavior disrupts the flow of water and nutrients, resulting in the dieback of branches, reduced yields, and eventually the death of the tree if the infestation is severe or if the trunk is girdled by the larvae.

Management of this pest is challenging due to its concealed habitat. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential:

  • Regular field scouting to identify larval entrance holes and frass deposits.
  • Sanitary pruning and destruction of infested branches or heavily colonized trees.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight activity of adult beetles.
  • Trunk protection using whitewashing combined with insecticidal additives to deter oviposition.
