Description
Systematic position. Nephopterix belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae (snout moths). These moths are significant agricultural pests known for their larvae that feed on various woody plant species, causing economic damage to orchards and ornamental gardens.
Host plants and damage. The pest primarily targets fruit trees of the Rosaceae family, including apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. Larvae are particularly destructive to buds, young foliage, and inflorescences. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial canopy thinning and long-term reduction in fruit yields.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as an early-instar larva inside a dense silk cocoon hidden under the bark or in tree crevices. Activity resumes in early spring, synchronized with the swelling and opening of the host plant buds.
Nature of damage. The primary sign of infestation is the presence of hollowed-out buds often secured with fine silken webbing. Larvae consume the internal tissues, effectively destroying the plant's potential for growth and flowering. Damage is most visible in early spring, though later generations may feed on leaves, folding them or binding them together.
Control measures. Effective management integrates cultural practices and chemical interventions. Cultural control includes cleaning the trunk bark to destroy overwintering sites and pruning infested shoots. During critical periods, such as bud burst, the application of targeted insecticides is necessary to suppress larval populations and prevent further foliage loss.
