Spotted crane fly
Nephrotoma maculosa
Description
The spotted crane fly (Nephrotoma maculosa) belongs to the Tipulidae family within the order Diptera. While adult crane flies are harmless and feed on nectar, their larvae, often referred to as leatherjackets, are notorious soil-dwelling pests. These larvae inhabit the upper soil layers and cause significant damage to the root systems of various agricultural crops.
This pest affects a wide range of plants, including cereals (wheat, barley, oats), maize, grassland, and various vegetable crops. The larvae are particularly destructive during the early growth stages of plants. By feeding on roots, root hairs, and underground stems, they weaken the plant and can cause total plant death in extreme cases of infestation.
The biological cycle of Nephrotoma maculosa is strongly influenced by soil moisture levels. Females prefer to lay eggs in moist, well-structured soils with organic matter. Once hatched, the larvae develop in the soil, and their activity peaks during seasons with high rainfall. The larval development period can be quite long, extending through several instars before the insects pupate in the soil.
Damage caused by the larvae manifests as thinning of stands and patches of stunted or wilting plants. Because the injury occurs below the ground, it is often difficult to detect until substantial damage to the crop has already occurred. High populations of larvae can devastate seedling emergence, leading to severe economic losses for farmers if not managed early.
To control the spotted crane fly effectively, an integrated approach is necessary. Key management practices include:
- Implementing proper soil drainage to reduce the humidity levels preferred by larvae.
- Practicing deep autumn ploughing to expose larvae to natural predators.
- Using insecticidal seed treatments to provide early-stage crop protection.
- Monitoring soil populations before sowing to determine the risk levels and need for potential soil insecticide applications.
