Systematic position. Nephrotoma makiella belongs to the order Diptera, family Tipulidae. This insect is a significant soil-borne pest. Understanding its classification is crucial for identifying its role in the ecosystem and the agricultural damage it can cause during the larval stage.

Affected crops. The pest has a wide host range, posing a threat to cereals (wheat, barley, oats), corn, sugar beets, and various vegetable seedlings. It shows a strong preference for damp, heavy soils with high organic content, often leading to localized outbreaks in low-lying field areas.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in moist soil or near the bases of plants. The larvae, often called leatherjackets due to their tough skin, feed on roots and decaying organic matter. They overwinter in the soil and reach their peak feeding activity during the spring, which often coincides with the germination and early growth of crops.

Damage and economic significance. Larvae cause direct damage by consuming seeds, roots, and root collars, which often results in the wilting or complete destruction of seedlings. Damage is typically patchy, resulting in poor stands and reduced yields. Secondary fungal infections frequently colonize the roots damaged by the larvae, further stressing the crops and complicating recovery.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Nephrotoma makiella. Key strategies include:

• Deep fall plowing to expose larvae to natural predators and environmental stress.
• Proper crop rotation to break the pest cycle.
• Improving soil drainage to make the environment less hospitable.
• Using seed treatments or soil insecticides during planting for high-risk areas.
