Two-spotted nephus

The two-spotted nephus (Nephus bipunctatus) is a small beetle belonging to the Coccinellidae family within the order Coleoptera. While members of this family are often viewed as beneficial predators, this specific species is frequently monitored in agroecosystems due to its association with major crop-damaging pests like mealybugs and scale insects.

This insect primarily infests fruit orchards, vineyards, and various ornamental shrubs. Its prevalence is closely linked to the presence of host plant stressors and existing infestations of soft-bodied insects, which serve as the primary nutritional source for the developing larvae of the nephus.
