Description

The Alder pigmy moth (syn. Stigmella alnetella, Nepticula alnetella) belongs to the Nepticulidae family of the order Lepidoptera. It is a tiny but significant pest known for its leaf-mining behavior, which specifically targets alder trees, causing aesthetic and physiological damage to the foliage.

The primary host plants for this species are various species of the genus Alnus. The adult moth lays tiny eggs on the leaf surface. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately mine into the leaf tissue, feeding on the mesophyll between the upper and lower epidermis, which protects them from many external predators and environmental factors.

The lifecycle typically begins in the spring when overwintered pupae emerge as adults. After mating, females lay eggs on host leaves. Depending on the climate, the insect can complete one or more generations per year. The larvae spend their entire feeding stage within the leaf, creating distinct, winding tunnels often referred to as mines.

The damage caused by the alder pigmy moth is characterized by these leaf mines, which can become so numerous that the entire leaf surface turns necrotic or shrivels. Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, which reduces the tree's vigor, makes it more susceptible to secondary infections, and significantly lowers its decorative value in landscaping.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices, such as removing fallen leaves at the end of the season, can reduce the overwintering population of pupae. For nursery or specimen tree protection, systemic insecticides applied during the peak flight period of adult moths or at the onset of larval hatching provide the best results.
