The Poplar pygmy moth (Nepticula argyropeza), scientifically known as a member of the Nepticulidae family within the order Lepidoptera, is a specialized leaf-mining insect. These tiny moths are predominantly found in regions where their host plants, specifically Populus species like the common aspen, are abundant.
The primary hosts for this pest are various species of poplars and aspen. The damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which are leaf miners. By feeding on the internal tissue of the leaves, they create distinct mines that interfere with the plant's ability to process nutrients and sunlight effectively.
The biological cycle involves the adult stage, where moths emerge to mate and lay eggs on the foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the leaf, creating tunnels.
