Hazel pygmy moth

The Hazel pygmy moth, scientifically classified as Stigmella floslactella, is a tiny moth belonging to the family Nepticulidae within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is primarily known as a leaf-mining pest, characterized by its extremely small size and highly specific host preferences during its larval stage.

The moth specifically targets various species within the Corylus genus, most notably the common hazel and commercial hazelnut (filbert) varieties. While it can occasionally be found on hornbeam or birch, the impact is most economically significant in hazelnut orchards where leaf health is critical for tree vitality.

The life cycle of this species typically consists of one or two generations per year. Adults are small, inconspicuous moths that lay their eggs directly on the leaves. Once the larvae hatch, they immediately bore into the epidermis of the leaf to feed on the inner parenchyma tissue, remaining protected within their mining galleries throughout their development.

The damage caused by the Hazel pygmy moth is primarily aesthetic and physiological. The larvae create long, winding, ribbon-like mines inside the leaf blades. These mines become visible as pale, necrotic tracks that disrupt the leaf's ability to photosynthesize effectively, leading to early leaf yellowing and potentially premature abscission if the infestation levels are high.

Effective control strategies involve a combination of cultural practices and targeted chemical interventions. Removing and composting fallen leaves is a crucial step to reduce the local population of pupae. During periods of adult activity, chemical applications using systemic or contact insecticides can suppress moth numbers, provided they are applied during the initial stages of larval mining to ensure optimal efficacy.
