The cotton leaf miner (Nepticula gossypii) is a minute moth belonging to the family Nepticulidae, order Lepidoptera. Known as a specialized pest, it targets plants in the Malvaceae family. While small in size, its cumulative impact on cotton crops can be significant due to its specific feeding habits within the leaf tissue.
The primary host for this pest is the cotton plant (Gossypium spp.). It is found in various cotton-growing regions where favorable temperatures promote its reproduction. Because the larvae live inside the leaves, they often go unnoticed until significant damage to the foliage has already occurred across the plantation.
The life cycle of the cotton leaf miner involves multiple generations during a single growing season. Adult moths lay eggs on the leaf surface. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the leaf epidermis, creating mines where they consume the inner tissues (mesophyll). This internal feeding lifestyle protects them from many predators and environmental stressors.
Symptoms of infestation are highly characteristic: winding, thread-like translucent trails appear on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, these mines can merge, causing the leaf tissue to wither and die.
