Description

Systematic position. The hawthorn pygmy moth (Stigmella oxyacanthella, synonymous with Nepticula oxyacanthella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Nepticulidae. These are extremely small moths known as leaf miners, as their larvae specialize in feeding on the internal tissues of leaves.

Affected crops. The pest primarily targets members of the Rosaceae family. Its main hosts include hawthorn, apple, pear, rowan, and cotoneaster. In orchards, this pest can cause significant physiological stress to the trees when infestations become severe and widespread.

Biology and life cycle. The species overwinters as pupae in cocoons located in the soil or within the crevices of tree bark. Adult moths emerge in spring to mate and lay eggs individually on the underside of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the leaf tissue to feed and grow through several instars within the mine.

Character of damage and harmfulness. The larvae create long, winding, narrow mines within the leaf blade, which widen as the caterpillar matures. These damaged areas turn brown, desiccate, and can lead to premature leaf drop. Heavy infestations reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, potentially leading to weakened tree vigor and lower harvest yields.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach to manage the population throughout the season:

  • Sanitation, including the collection and destruction of fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering sites.
  • Soil cultivation beneath the canopy in late autumn to disrupt pupal development.
  • Application of systemic or contact insecticides targeted at the timing of larval emergence.
  • Preservation of natural parasitoids that hunt for larvae inside the mines.
