The raspberry leaf miner (lat. Nepticula rubescens) is a small insect classified within the order Lepidoptera and the family Nepticulidae. This species is a specialized pest that impacts raspberry plants during the vegetative season. As a leaf miner, the organism spends its larval stage feeding on the internal tissues of host plant leaves.

The primary host for this pest is the raspberry (Rubus idaeus). The larvae feed exclusively on the mesophyll layer of the leaf, causing damage that disrupts photosynthesis. Because the larvae remain inside the leaf, they are protected from many external environmental stressors and predators, which makes them a challenging pest to manage in commercial fruit production.

The biological cycle of Nepticula rubescens is closely aligned with the seasonal development of the raspberry plant. Females deposit eggs on the surface of the leaves, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the tissue. The resulting mines are typically linear, winding, or serpentine in appearance, widening as the larva grows in size.

The damage caused by the raspberry leaf miner is characterized by distinct discoloration of the leaves along the paths created by the larvae. Heavy infestations result in significant chlorosis, localized necrosis, and early leaf drop. This foliage loss weakens the entire plant, which often leads to reduced fruit size, diminished yields, and lower vigor for the following year.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential for controlling this miner effectively. Recommended actions include:

• Sanitation practices such as removing and destroying infested leaves during the growing season.
• Cultivation of the soil under the bushes in the fall to expose overwintering pupae to cold and natural predators.
