Description
The Willow pigmy moth (Nepticula salicis, currently classified as Stigmella salicis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Nepticulidae. These moths are among the smallest lepidopterans in the world, with larvae that are specialized leaf miners feeding within the leaf tissue of their host plants.
The primary hosts for this pest are various species of willow (Salix spp.). The moth is widely distributed across temperate regions, where it frequently infests ornamental willows in gardens, parks, and natural riverine habitats, often going unnoticed until the damage becomes visible.
The life cycle begins with the egg being deposited on the leaf surface. The hatching larva immediately bores into the leaf, creating a distinct, winding mine as it eats the parenchyma layer. Once the larval stage is complete, the insect leaves the leaf to pupate in a silk cocoon, usually in the soil or protected crevices of the bark.
The damage is characterized by narrow, serpentine tracks or galleries (mines) visible on the leaves. These galleries disrupt the leaf's ability to perform photosynthesis. In severe infestations, the foliage may wilt, turn brown prematurely, and drop, which aesthetic degradation aside, can weaken the tree if the infestation persists over several seasons.
Management strategies for controlling Nepticula salicis focus on both cultural practices and targeted chemical interventions:
- Removal and destruction of fallen leaves during autumn to eliminate overwintering pupae residing in the leaf litter.
- Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight period of adult moths to prevent egg-laying and larval entry.
