The common spangle gall wasp (Neuroterus quercusbaccarum) is an insect species within the order Hymenoptera, family Cynipidae. This pest is widely known for its ability to induce the formation of specialized galls on oak trees, which serve as protective habitats and nutrient sources for the developing larvae.
The life cycle of this species is complex and exhibits heterogony, involving the alternation of two distinct generations. The agamic (asexual) generation develops during the summer inside flat, disc-shaped galls on the underside of oak leaves. The sexual generation emerges in the spring, developing from small, hairy, globular galls attached to catkins or developing buds.
The primary hosts of this wasp are various species of oak (Quercus). The damage is caused by the chemical substances secreted by the larvae, which force the plant to create a gall. While these growths are a fascinating biological phenomenon, they act as a nutrient sink, potentially weakening the host tree if the infestation levels are extremely high over several seasons.
Symptoms of the infestation include the presence of numerous small galls on the foliage or catkins. Heavy infestations can lead to early leaf drop and stress the tree, particularly when combined with environmental factors such as drought or secondary pathogens. However, for mature and healthy trees, the presence of these wasps is usually considered a cosmetic or minor nuisance rather than a severe threat.
Management and control strategies focus on sanitation and biological balance rather than aggressive chemical treatment:
