Description
The brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) is one of the most destructive insect pests of rice crops worldwide. Belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Delphacidae, this pest has a high biotic potential. It is particularly notorious for its ability to cause massive crop failures in rice-producing regions of Asia.
The species feeds exclusively on rice plants (Oryza sativa). Both nymphs and adults extract sap from the vascular tissues of the rice stems. This persistent feeding causes the plants to lose nutrients rapidly, leading to yellowing, stunted growth, and death of the stems, which compromises the overall yield potential of the crop.
The life cycle of the brown planthopper consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. A key biological feature is the polymorphism of adults: macropterous (long-winged) forms, which are capable of long-distance migration, and brachypterous (short-winged) forms, which remain stationary and exhibit higher reproductive rates. Generations often overlap during the growing season.
The damage caused by N. lugens is often described as "hopperburn," characterized by large brown patches of dried-up rice in the field. Beyond physical injury, the insect is a major vector for viral diseases like rice ragged stunt and grassy stunt. These viruses disrupt physiological processes in plants, leading to severe grain yield reduction or total loss.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this insect includes several key strategies:
- planting resistant or tolerant rice varieties;
- avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilizer application to reduce plant susceptibility;
- promoting the conservation of natural predators, such as spiders, mirid bugs, and dragonflies;
- implementing systematic field monitoring during the vegetative phase;
- applying judicious and selective insecticides only when economic thresholds are met.
