Niphona picticornis

Niphona picticornis is a longhorn beetle belonging to the subfamily Lamiinae (order Coleoptera). This beetle is recognized by its elongated body and distinctively patterned antennae, which provide effective camouflage against the bark of host trees. It is primarily found in regions where it poses a significant risk to the health and structural integrity of woody plants.

The host range of this pest includes various ornamental, fruit, and forest tree species. While the beetle typically seeks out stressed or declining trees, high population densities can lead to infestations in healthy trees, resulting in weakened defenses and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or environmental stress.

The life cycle of the beetle is deeply integrated with the host's wood. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices or notches. Upon hatching, larvae immediately begin boring into the phloem and cambium layers. As they mature, they tunnel deeper into the xylem, feeding and creating intricate galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the host plant before eventually pupating inside the wood.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily internal, making it difficult to detect in the early stages. The destruction of the cambium and xylem prevents the transport of water and essential nutrients, leading to yellowing leaves, dieback of branches, and ultimately tree death. Characteristic signs of infestation include exit holes on the bark and piles of frass (boring dust) at the base of the tree.

Effective management strategies include:

• Regular sanitation pruning to remove infested branches and reduce population buildup.
• Improving tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
• Applying insecticides during the peak flight period of adult beetles.
• Installing pheromone or light traps for monitoring and mass trapping.
• Using systemic treatments to target larvae inside the wood structure.
