Niphonoclea capito is a specific insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. This species is recognized for its wood-boring behavior, which primarily targets various tree species within the Rutaceae family, particularly citrus cultivars in tropical and subtropical climates.
The biological cycle of this pest is primarily wood-dependent. Adult beetles select susceptible trees, often those already weakened by environmental stress or poor care, to lay their eggs. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, as the larvae bore galleries deep into the woody tissues, disrupting the tree's internal structures.
Damage caused by Niphonoclea capito is often insidious. External signs include the presence of wood shavings near the base of the tree, localized branch dieback, and an overall decrease in tree vigor. By tunneling through the xylem and phloem, the larvae interfere with nutrient and water transport, eventually causing the tree to weaken severely.
