Ilex Hairstreak

Systematic position. The Ilex Hairstreak (Nordmannia ilicis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lycaenidae. While often appreciated for its beauty, in an agricultural context, this species is recognized for the feeding habits of its larvae, which can impact various woody plants.

Affected crops and damage. The larvae primarily feed on the foliage of plants in the Rosaceae family, including plums, blackthorn, and oaks. By consuming leaf tissue, the caterpillars reduce the plant's photosynthetic capacity. In nurseries or young orchards, this feeding behavior can stunt growth and weaken the overall vitality of the trees.

Biology and lifecycle. The species has a univoltine lifecycle, meaning it produces one generation per year. The winter is spent in the egg stage, which are laid on the bark of host tree branches. As temperatures rise in spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding on developing buds and leaves, eventually pupating in the leaf litter or near the base of the tree.

Economic significance. Although Nordmannia ilicis is not always classified as a primary economic pest, its local outbreaks can lead to noticeable defoliation. Persistent feeding can cause stress to host plants, making them more susceptible to secondary environmental factors like drought, frost damage, or fungal pathogens that exploit weakened trees.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are recommended to mitigate damage:

• Regular inspection of branches in late winter to identify egg clusters if infestation history exists.
• Applying targeted insecticides during the larval feeding stage in spring, if damage thresholds are exceeded.
• Promoting biodiversity in orchards to ensure a stable population of natural predators like spiders and parasitic wasps.
• Physical removal of severely infested twigs during routine pruning operations.
