Description
The Greater Rose Tortrix (Notocelia roborana) is a moth belonging to the family Tortricidae, order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest primarily affecting plants of the genus Rosa, including wild briars and cultivated roses in parks, home gardens, and commercial nurseries.
The adult moth has a wingspan of approximately 20–24 mm. Its forewings display a complex pattern of brown and grey markings, which provides excellent camouflage against tree bark. The larvae, which are the main destructive stage, vary in color as they mature, typically showing darker heads and translucent bodies.
The life cycle typically involves a single generation per year. The larvae overwinter within silken cocoons tucked away in bark crevices or under debris at the base of the host plant. They emerge in early spring, coinciding with bud burst, and immediately begin feeding on young foliage and developing buds.
Damage is characterized by the rolling and tying together of leaves using silk, creating protected chambers where larvae feed. This behavior destroys growing points, leading to stunted shoots, poor bud development, and in severe cases, the complete loss of floral displays on the infested plants.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for control. Cultural practices, such as removing and destroying infested plant parts and clearing leaf litter, help reduce population levels. In cases of high infestation, chemical control with appropriate insecticides should be applied early in the spring before the larvae successfully create their protective rolled-leaf shelters.
