The genus Notodonta belongs to the family Notodontidae within the order Lepidoptera. These nocturnal moths are commonly known as prominents, named after the distinctive tufts of scales on the inner margin of their forewings. These insects are widely distributed across temperate regions and are frequently found in forests, woodlands, and urban landscapes where their host plants are present.

The primary hosts for these moths include various deciduous trees and shrubs, such as poplar, willow, birch, oak, and occasionally fruit trees. It is the larval stage, or caterpillar, that acts as the pest. These larvae are voracious feeders, capable of consuming significant amounts of foliage during their development, which can lead to severe stress for the host plants if infestations are high.

The biological cycle of Notodonta typically involves overwintering as a pupa, protected within a tough cocoon buried in the soil or leaf litter. Adult moths emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs on the undersides of host leaves. The caterpillars emerge shortly after, passing through several instars of growth before finding a suitable site for pupation, completing one or more generations per year depending on the climate.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily foliar. Young caterpillars may skeletonize the leaves, while older ones consume entire leaf blades, often leaving only the midribs and major veins. Extensive defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, weakens its physiological state, and makes it susceptible to opportunistic diseases and attacks by secondary pests like wood-boring insects.

When infestations reach economic thresholds, targeted insecticide applications are recommended, ideally timed to coincide with the early larval stages to maximize efficacy and minimize ecological impact.
