Description
The Iron Prominent (Latin: Notodonta dromedarius) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Notodontidae. This moth is commonly found across temperate regions, inhabiting deciduous woodlands, parks, and gardens where it can readily find its host plants.
The primary host plants for the Iron Prominent larvae include various deciduous trees, with a strong preference for alder, birch, hazel, and willow species. While often viewed as a forest insect, in high numbers, it can become a pest in ornamental gardens and nurseries, causing localized damage.
The biological cycle of the moth consists of one or two generations per year, depending on the local climate. The insect overwinters as a pupa within a tough cocoon, typically concealed in the leaf litter or just below the soil surface. Adult moths emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs on the leaves of host trees.
Larval feeding causes the most significant damage to host plants. Early instars live and feed in groups, creating patches of skeletonized leaves, while later instars spread out and consume entire leaves, leaving only the midribs. Severe infestations can lead to partial or complete defoliation, stressing the host tree.
Effective management strategies combine cultural and chemical practices. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil care helps trees withstand feeding pressure. During peak outbreaks, targeted application of biological insecticides such as Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) is highly recommended for larval suppression.
