Several species within this genus, most notably Nudaurelia cytherea, are recognized as serious defoliators, capable of causing widespread destruction to both commercial forest plantations and native woodlands.

Systematically, this insect is classified under the order Lepidoptera, family Saturniidae. These moths are characterized by their significant body size and high reproductive capacity, which allows them to achieve massive population densities under favorable climatic conditions, leading to severe outbreaks.
