Description
Nupserha nitidior is a species of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) that acts as a significant pest in agricultural ecosystems. Although it is not universally recognized as a major pest everywhere, in specific geographical zones, it is known to cause severe damage to leguminous crops.
The primary host plant for this insect is soybean (Glycine max). The adult beetles feed on leaf tissues, but the larval stage is the most destructive, as they bore into the stems, effectively disrupting the vascular system of the host plant and hindering the transportation of water and nutrients.
The biology of Nupserha nitidior is characterized by a holometabolous life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit into the stems of the host. Upon hatching, the larvae create galleries inside the stem, consuming the pith, which weakens the structural integrity of the plant significantly.
The damage caused by this pest is often categorized as stem-boring injury. Infested plants exhibit wilting, stunted growth, and premature senescence. In severe cases, the stem breaks at the point of larval activity, leading to lodging, reduced pod formation, and substantial yield loss at harvest time.
