Description

Taxonomy: The Brown-tail moth (Nygmia phaeorrhoea) is a moth of the Erebidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant defoliator in many regions, known for its ability to cause massive damage to deciduous forests and fruit orchards.

Host plants: This species is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide range of woody plants. Fruit trees such as apples, pears, plums, and cherries are primary targets. It is also frequently found on various deciduous trees, including hawthorn, oak, elm, and beech, often causing large-scale defoliation.

Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as second or third-instar larvae within communal silken nests securely attached to branches. As spring arrives, larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and foliage. By mid-summer, they pupate, and adult moths emerge in July and August to mate and lay eggs, covering them with characteristic brown hairs from their abdomens.

Damage and impact: The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which feed gregariously on leaves. Early spring defoliation can lead to a complete loss of foliage, severely impacting the host tree's photosynthetic capacity and fruit production. Additionally, the larval hairs contain toxins that cause severe skin irritation and respiratory issues in humans upon contact.

Control measures: Management strategies focus on sanitation and timely chemical intervention. The most effective non-chemical method involves pruning and destroying the overwintering larval nests during the winter months. During the growing season, applications of microbial insecticides (such as Bacillus thuringiensis) or contact-based chemical insecticides are recommended to suppress population outbreaks.
