The slender sea spider (Nymphon gracile) is a marine arthropod belonging to the class Pycnogonida and the family Nymphonidae. While common in intertidal zones, it is recognized as a problematic pest in marine aquaculture and managed marine environments, where it feeds on protected coral species, hydroids, and bryozoans.

The biology of Nymphon gracile is adapted for an ambush or scavenger lifestyle. These organisms possess a thin, elongated body and four pairs of walking legs, which allow them to maneuver through dense colonies of hydrozoans. Their reproductive strategy involves the male carrying the eggs on specialized ovigers, which ensures a high survival rate of the larvae that eventually settle on hosts to parasitize them.

The damage caused by these sea spiders is often underestimated due to their cryptic appearance. They utilize a specialized proboscis to pierce the outer layers of their prey, extracting fluids and soft tissues. In marine farming, this feeding behavior leads to the gradual destruction of colony structure, stress in cultured organisms, and potential secondary infections at the wound sites.

Host susceptibility includes various cnidarians and sessile colonial invertebrates. Typical signs of infestation include patchy tissue death, thinning of polyp density, and the visible presence of the spiders clinging to the substrate. Because they mimic their surroundings, infestations often go unnoticed until significant damage to the biomass has already occurred.

Management and control strategies for Nymphon gracile focus on exclusion and physical removal. Strict quarantine protocols for any new biological additions are essential to prevent the introduction of eggs or larvae. In closed systems, manual extraction is the standard recommendation, as chemical treatments are usually too harmful to other sensitive marine life. Maintaining high water quality and monitoring substrate health remains the best proactive approach.
