Description
Systematic position. The raspberry cane borer (Oberea bimaculata) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. It is a well-known pest in North America that specifically targets plants within the Rubus genus, primarily cultivated and wild raspberries and blackberries.
Affected crops and damage. The species is highly detrimental to raspberry plantations. While adults feed on leaves and young shoots, the larvae cause the most severe economic damage by boring tunnels into the stems, disrupting nutrient transport and causing the tips of the canes to wilt and eventually die back.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle typically spans one to two years. In early summer, the female beetle makes two rings of punctures near the tip of a new cane and places an egg between them. The larva tunnels downward through the pith of the cane, overwinters inside the stem, and completes its development and pupation during the following spring.
Character of damage. The presence of the borer is signaled by the drooping and blackening of the shoot tips. Inside the affected stems, one can find a distinct spiral tunnel carved by the larva. If left unchecked, these tunnels weaken the entire cane, leading to reduced vigor and total crop loss on the affected individual canes.
Control measures. The most effective cultural control is the immediate pruning and destruction of infested canes, ensuring the cut is made well below the tunnel entrance. Maintaining clean cultivation practices and eliminating wild host plants around the field perimeter help reduce population pressure. Targeted insecticide applications during the adult emergence phase can also significantly mitigate infestation levels.
