Raspberry stem borer

Oberea fuscipennis is a species of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) that serves as a specialized pest of berry crops. This insect primarily targets plants within the Rubus genus, causing significant physiological stress and structural damage to the stems of raspberry bushes.

The host range is centered on raspberries, where the beetle completes its life cycle. It is particularly prevalent in managed orchards and wild thickets, where it can cause localized but severe economic damage if not monitored and controlled effectively during the early season.

The biology of this pest involves a complex larval stage where the larva bores into the central pith of the raspberry cane. Adults emerge in spring, mate, and deposit eggs on new shoots. This internal feeding pattern allows the larva to remain protected from environmental factors and surface-applied pesticides for much of its life.

The primary symptom of infestation is the drooping and yellowing of cane tips, followed by the death of the upper stem. Upon closer inspection, one can find entry holes or characteristic swellings (galls) on the cane. The plant's nutrient transport system is disrupted, significantly reducing fruit quality and the overall vigor of the bush.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include:

• Regular pruning and destruction of infested canes before larvae mature.
• Targeted insecticide applications during the adult emergence phase.
• Maintaining field hygiene to eliminate potential overwintering sites for the beetle.
• Monitoring shoot health throughout the spring and early summer growing seasons.
