Eyed longhorn beetle

The eyed longhorn beetle (Oberea oculata) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Cerambycidae family. This wood-boring insect is primarily recognized as a pest in forestry and ornamental gardening, targeting specific host trees and causing significant physiological stress to the plants it colonizes.

The primary hosts for this species include trees within the Salix genus, especially various types of willows. They are also known to occasionally infest poplars and aspens. In environments where these trees are planted in high density, the eyed longhorn beetle can become a serious problem, particularly in nurseries and waterside plantations.

The life cycle of this beetle typically spans two years. During the summer months, adult beetles emerge to mate. Females lay eggs on young branches, which leads to the larvae burrowing deep into the wood. The larval stage is responsible for the internal damage to the tree as they construct extensive feeding galleries that weaken the structural integrity of the branch.

The damage caused by the eyed longhorn beetle is characterized by the sudden wilting and drying of affected branches. The presence of boreholes and wood dust (frass) at the base of branches is a classic indicator of infestation. The weakened wood often snaps during high winds, and the internal damage frequently allows secondary pathogens, such as fungi, to enter the tree.

Integrated management strategies for controlling this pest include:

• Rigorous sanitary pruning, specifically targeting and removing infested branches before the larvae complete their development.
• Monitoring the flight periods of adult beetles to apply targeted chemical controls when necessary.
• Enhancing tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and irrigation to improve the host's natural defenses.
• Encouraging the presence of natural predators, such as woodpeckers and parasitic wasps, which can naturally regulate beetle populations.
