Honeysuckle longhorn beetle
Oberea pupillata
Description
The honeysuckle longhorn beetle (Oberea pupillata) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This beetle primarily infests honeysuckle species (Lonicera). It is widely recognized by horticulturists as a significant threat to the health and structural integrity of both wild and cultivated honeysuckle plants.
The adult beetle is typically 10 to 15 mm in length, featuring a slender body and prominent, long antennae, which are typical characteristics of the Lamiinae subfamily. Their coloration often ranges from brownish-yellow to blackish, providing excellent camouflage against the woody stems and foliage of the host plant during the active adult stage.
The biological cycle of this pest can last one or two years. Adult emergence usually occurs in late spring or early summer. Female beetles display a distinct egg-laying behavior: they create two parallel circular cuts in the stem of the host plant and deposit an egg between them, effectively girdling the shoot and causing it to wither and die above the injury site.
The larvae that emerge tunnel into the center of the stem, feeding on the vascular tissue and wood. This activity compromises the nutrient flow, resulting in wilted tips, leaf drop, and weakened stems. Severe infestations can significantly reduce the vitality of the plant and jeopardize berry production in fruit-bearing varieties.
Management strategies for the honeysuckle longhorn beetle focus on integrated pest management practices. Key approaches include:
- Early detection of characteristic stem girdling or wilting.
- Pruning and destroying affected shoots below the damage site before larvae move further down the stem.
- Application of registered systemic insecticides targeting adult beetles during their emergence phase.
Consistent monitoring during the spring and early summer is essential to prevent significant damage. By maintaining high plant vigor through proper fertilization and watering, gardeners can also help honeysuckle plants better withstand the stress caused by occasional larval feeding.
