Description
The lemon tree borer (Oemona hirta) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Cerambycidae family. Originating from New Zealand, it has become a significant pest for orchardists, gardeners, and viticulturists because its larvae bore extensively into the stems and trunks of woody plants.
Taxonomically, the insect is classified within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are characterized by their elongated bodies covered in fine hairs. While the adults feed on foliage or nectar, the primary economic damage is caused by the larval stage, which spends its life inside the plant's vascular tissue.
The pest has a wide host range, including citrus, grapevines, roses, apples, and various ornamental trees. The larvae penetrate the wood and create intricate galleries, which disrupt the flow of water and nutrients throughout the plant. This often results in the wilting of terminal shoots, branch dieback, and in severe cases, the death of the tree.
The life cycle of the lemon tree borer is relatively long, typically spanning one to two years. Eggs are laid on the bark of host plants, and newly emerged larvae tunnel directly into the cambium layer. As they grow, they move deeper into the xylem, continuing to feed until they reach the pupal stage, usually occurring within the wood itself.
