Two-lobed longhorn beetle
Olenecamptus bilobus
Description
The Two-lobed longhorn beetle (Olenecamptus bilobus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is recognized as a significant stem-boring pest that primarily affects various deciduous tree species within its geographical distribution range in Asia.
This pest targets a range of host plants, showing a strong preference for members of the Moraceae and Fabaceae families. Economically important crops such as fig trees (Ficus carica) and mulberry (Morus spp.) are frequently documented as primary hosts, alongside various ornamental trees that are susceptible to infestation.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically oviposit into crevices of the tree bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and sapwood, creating galleries that disrupt nutrient transport and weaken the structural integrity of the host plant.
The primary symptoms of infestation include the presence of boreholes on the bark and piles of wood dust (frass) at the base of the tree. The physiological damage caused by larval feeding significantly reduces the tree's vitality, leading to dieback of branches, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the complete death of the infested plant.
- Maintain tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
- Prune and destroy infested branches promptly to reduce population density.
- Apply systemic insecticides during the adult emergence period to prevent further egg-laying.
- Monitor tree health regularly to detect early signs of borer activity.
Effective management requires an integrated approach that combines sanitation practices with targeted chemical applications. By reducing the availability of stressed host plants and eliminating larvae residing in branches, growers can successfully minimize the negative impact of this beetle on their orchards and ornamental landscapes.
