Description
Systematic position. The mulberry leafroller (Olethreutes mori) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a specific pest that primarily targets mulberry trees (Morus species), representing a significant threat to orchards where these trees are cultivated for both fruit and sericulture purposes.
Affected crops. The pest is specialized on mulberry trees. The larvae are the destructive stage, feeding aggressively on the foliage. While mature trees can withstand some damage, severe infestations can lead to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic capability, and a significant decrease in overall yield quality.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Overwintering typically occurs as larvae tucked away within silken cocoons in bark crevices or among debris at the base of the trees. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and young leaves.
Damage and pest impact. Larvae exhibit typical leaf-rolling behavior, spinning silk to fold or bundle leaves together, which creates a protective shelter while they feed. They skeletonize or consume large portions of the leaf blade. This feeding behavior not only destroys foliage but also facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens into the plant tissues.
Protection measures. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.
- Sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infested leaves and wintering debris.
- Monitoring for early signs of larval activity in spring to apply targeted treatments.
