Portuguese millipede

The Portuguese millipede (Ommatoiulus moreleti) is a species of millipede in the family Julidae. While primarily detritivores that feed on decaying organic matter, they can become significant agricultural pests when their populations reach high densities, causing damage to both indoor and outdoor plant collections.

This pest affects a wide range of crops, including strawberries, potatoes, tomatoes, and various leafy vegetables. They are particularly destructive to germinating seeds and young seedlings, as they consume the delicate shoots and roots, often causing complete crop failure in small-scale vegetable gardens.

The biology and lifecycle of the Portuguese millipede are heavily influenced by environmental moisture. Eggs are laid in the soil, and the development process includes several molts. They prefer damp conditions, and high humidity levels following rainfall events often trigger mass movements, leading to their migration into human dwellings and cultivated areas.

Damage caused by this millipede is characterized by irregular holes and ragged edges on leaves, stems, and roots. In addition to direct feeding, their presence is often associated with the breakdown of plant tissue, as they introduce bacteria and fungi that cause rapid rot and degradation of valuable harvests.

Integrated pest management is the most effective approach for control. Key strategies include:
