Oncideres putator is a species of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) known for its distinctive behavior of girdling tree branches. Commonly referred to as a twig girdler, this insect is a significant pest in various forestry and horticultural settings, causing mechanical damage to living trees through its reproductive habits.

The beetle targets a wide range of broadleaf trees, frequently infesting species within the Fabaceae family and other hardwood trees. It poses a specific threat to young nursery stock and small ornamental trees, as the removal of structural branches can severely compromise the plant's structural integrity, growth vigor, and aesthetic appeal.

The lifecycle is centered around the adult female's activity. She creates a deep, circular groove around a healthy branch and lays eggs beneath the bark of the distal portion. This process effectively kills the branch, which eventually breaks off and falls to the ground. The larvae then develop and feed within the decaying wood, protected from environmental stressors and predators until they complete their metamorphosis.

The damage caused by Oncideres putator is characterized by the presence of severed branches on the ground, often showing clean, girdled cuts. Beyond the immediate physical loss of foliage and biomass, these wounds provide entry points for pathogens and opportunistic fungi, potentially leading to branch dieback or the overall decline of the host tree if the infestation is severe.
