Oncideres rhodosticta is a species of longhorned beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, subfamily Lamiinae. This insect is widely recognized as a specialized pest that targets mesquite trees (Prosopis spp.). Due to its reproductive behavior, it has a direct impact on the structure and health of its host trees in arid ecosystems.

The primary damage is caused by adult females, which girdle branches by chewing a ring around them to lay eggs. This action restricts the flow of nutrients and water to the distal portion of the branch, eventually causing the branch to die and fall. This behavior is essential for the development of the larvae, which feed on the dying wood.

The life cycle involves an egg stage laid under the bark of the girdled branch, followed by the larval stage, which involves tunneling deep into the wood. The pupation occurs within these tunnels, and after emerging, the adult beetle leaves the wood to mate and repeat the cycle, which is heavily influenced by seasonal climate patterns.

The visual impact of an infestation is striking: trees often have dead, girdled branches hanging or scattered on the ground. Chronic infestation can stunt the growth of young trees and significantly reduce the overall aesthetic and ecological value of mesquite stands in semi-arid environments.

Management strategies focus primarily on cultural control. Since the larvae develop within fallen branches, collecting and destroying these materials before adult emergence is the most effective way to reduce the population density. No major chemical controls are typically used on a wide scale due to the remote nature of the infested ecosystems.
